Resolved Question: I just moved to Houston and want to plant a garden. What plants should I plant?
I just moved to Houston from northern Utah. I adore plants and have a little space on the balcony of my apartment for some pots and planters. A few of the things I wanted to receive were Morning glory vine, lavender, and eventually peppermint. I went to a greenhouse yesterday and the owner there told me none of those grow in Houston? Is that true? Are the winters here mild enough that if I planted a few plants now they would survive? If not, What plants should I receive? Thank you!

Resolved Question: Mass Cane/Corn Plant Care Questions?
I found a Mass Cane plant on the clearance rack at a garden store. There were leaves on both sides but the connecting stem to one side smelled bad and seemed rotten so I clip it off with scissors. I knocked it over so I decided to replant it to check out the root system (which are very healthy looking). It is planted in mainly mulch, I believe there is a little soil on the bottom of the pot (I replanted it as it was when I bought it since I know very little about them). The outer leaves turned brown on the tips and have continued to turn brown so last night I broke off every the brown ones and noticed there is new growth of leaves beginning inside the one little leaf left. I feel the cane every few days to make sure it doesn’t feel rotted. I normally water it about once a week but the water seeps through the plant very quickly as it’s mainly mulch soil. Can someone direct me on how to make sure this plant makes it through this rough patch? I would adore nothing more than to keep it and turn it into a beautiful tree. What nice of soil is best? What type of planter is best (it’s currently in a 6 inch plastic pot)? What type of lighting? Can I bring it to my office where it would receive mainly fluorescent lighting or should I leave it in my window at home where it receives reflective light?

Resolved Question: How to prevent petunias becoming leggy / straggly?
I planted my patio planters with petunias this summer and they have been lovely, but now, although they are still blooming, they are very spindly and straggly looking with long stems and only a few blooms at the ends. I have dead-headed them regularly, watered regularly and fed weekly / fortnightly with liquid feed (Tomorite, which is what the lady at the garden centre told me to use). Other people's petunias still seem to look like tidy, compact little plants with plenty of blooms. What have I done wrong, and how can I prevent them getting straggly in future years?

Resolved Question: building custom Green Houses would you buy?
I've been thinking about building a green home and possibly selling them. I recently looked up the cost of a "green home kit" and found base line models to be around 599.00 plus and that doesn't include the 40'+ of 2x4 needed for the frame.. I am thinking of selling these so I want to share my idea and look if you every would like to buy such a thing and what you think a good price would be! Okay so as I said I found that a base model which would require you to plant in the ground is going to run about 1,000. Take that price into consideration, and be honest as if you would buy something like this, if you can afford to buy something like this, and what you would pay. Here's the idea, a 12'x12'x8' squared model, full UV green home plastic with 4 year warranty. Full floor, stained, water sealed, and clear coated. Two main isles, Nine, ten foot shelves to hold "planters" Planters will be either full 10' or can be built to be smaller sizes up to the ten foot length. Total of 90 feet of planting with each planter being about 2 foot wide x 1 foot deep. Also the back wall would be designated custom built tomato planters as tomatoes grow quite tall. Built in Irrigation system on timer, every you'd have to do is hook up your garden hose. Lighting system as if you needed access after dark. Everything stained to look nice, water sealed, and clear coated, would be two main Isles with a back isle. isles would have a traction specific mat so to talk. there would be several drains throughout the green home. Also thinking of possibly adding a separate room off the back to include a propane heater, which would be run by a 100LB Propane tank. OR Two 20LB tanks. Which ever proves more convenient for the buyer. the duct would be run below the main floor and coated with heat/water proof materials, and vents would be run up same as you would find in your home. Located directly below the planter shelves. This would be an Additional cost. The typical Temp gages and every would be included as well. I am also going to include 4 windows in the fashion of one rear, two side and the front door being a steel door with built in screen and sliding glass windows to allow for 4 way cross ventilation.. This would also allow for the Owner to put fans in said windows. I could also upon request build a fan into the wall of the green home. Now as far as lighting I was going to go with Camp style battery powered lights that would run off a light switch such as you'd use in your home, OR I can provide wired lights and in-turn you could run single extension cord to the green home that would power your lights and built in fan. The possibilities are almost endless. So, with every that in mind, what would you pay from the base line up the the top end realistic This is a idea I'm thinking of running with I have several others. Please if you have an opinion please put it forth. I am personally thinking base line idea of mine to go for about 1,500 give or take fully built which would consist of the shelves, planters, full floor, premium plastics, etc. ALSO forgot to MENTION every planters would arrive Pre-lined with Heavy Gauge Plastic ETC. this model would include windows as well. for about 1,500.00-2,000.00 Now the premium, with build in lights, built in fan, 6 section green home for easy break down and transport. Quick line up and clamp together design with easy hide away clamps going for about 3,000+ This scale is a 12x12x8 foot design offering a huge 204 sq ft of planting area.. that's a 102 foot row or 9 ten foot rows, and 1 12 foot row going across the back wall. each planter would be 10 foot x 2 foot and 1 foot deep. OR several smaller planters put into that 10 foot shelving unit. So, the question is would you buy this? and How much would you be willing to spend? I'm sleepy of seeing base line green houses selling for thousands of dollars or not including a door, or windows or even a frame or floor. So if you like my idea, yell out what you would pay, and if you could afford to pay such and let me know! REMEMBER THIS IS MY FIRST IDEA AND LAYOUT DESIGN, IF I DECIDE TO GO WITH IT I WILL CREATE AND DESIGN MORE LAYOUTS AND BUILD CUSTOM LAYOUTS AS WELL! every DEPENDING ON PRICE! THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND HELP!

Resolved Question: How to winterize fruiting plants in pots?
Currently living in zone 3 and thinking of getting some Top cap Blueberry plants as they supposed to be fine grown in pots and/or window planters. But, how do you winterize them? I don't have enough space in my garden to be putting them in the soil for the winter, and I don't really want to disturb the plant either. If it does survive the winter (once winterized appropriately) do I need to repot in the spring? Thanks.

Trying to keep money an wanting to have access to more vegetable an herbs for my family I'm wondering about starting a vegetable garden an herb garden. Do they need to be at a certain temperature/do I need a florescent light?(seen that before). Also, what sort of vegetables an herbs can I grow indoors? Thanks!

Resolved Question: Advice about gardening planters...?
My husband is in the military and we move a lot, but I would adore to have a garden. I was wondering what nice of fruits and vegetables I could plant, if any, and if I could move them if we have to leave before they are ready. Any information or advice/personal experience about planter gardening is appreciated. I didn't think about climate or budget. :) This whole thing is new to me. We are currently in Tn., but as I mentioned before, we move a lot. Budget is a play by ear nice of thing. I can spend a little more on this since it will keep money on the groceries.

Voting Question: What can I use in a raised box planter to cut down on soil?
I built a 10' x 6' x 22" raised garden box and the dirt I dug out to put it in only fills the box up about a third of the way. What are some things I could use in place of dirt to fill up another foot or so of the box to avoid having to buy hundreds of bags of topsoil? Preferably things found around the home like glass/plastic bottles and wood scraps. Anything that wouldn't be harmful to plants.

Voting Question: What are some veggies, fruits, or herbs I can grow in a medium planter box?
The box is about 30" long by 6" long. It's about 5 inches deep. We have more than one planter, but this is for mostly for things we can use in cooking and feed to our rabbits. We're starting a larger garden in our back yard, and this would be on our porch. Also, what is the best way to keep things like bees, beetles, STINK BUGS!, and ants way without pesticide type chemicals. This will be our first gardening we'll be doing, but we're being much more frugal and I thought this would be a nice lesson for my younger brother. (A variety of options would be nice as well.) Thanks!! Oh, also, when is a good time to start planting. It's been rainy and I think my pal's mom said something about waiting after Easter because PA is going to receive a frost or something.

Resolved Question: plants that grow well in shade?
Our front yard is very shady (so is the back but the front porch area gets no more than 1 hour or so) and my husband decided to rip out the nasty vines that were growing there and do a xeriscaping thing. He put down gravel and then got a bunch of cactus in wish of creating a little cactus garden. When I saw this, I knew it would not work because cactus need sun and that area doesn't provide it. I am trying to think of what shade plants would look good, how to arrange them and we can still leave the gravel there in the front. We have a narrow front porch that is level with the yard and there is a semi-circle path with pavers to the front door that is not every gravel. We used to have some nice of short vine like thing growing there and I don't know what it was but apparently it attracts roaches and is really difficult to remove. It was almost like carpet, short dark green leaves and very low maintenace. We wanted it gone because it was always growing over the porch and taking over the walkway. I will probably have to receive some big planters or something to put the new plants in and just put them on the gravel. So, what would look okay in that setup and grow well in the shade? I live in Austin, TX which is zone 8b or 9 I think.

I planted some asparagus at the start of last summer and have left them by the back door in a plastic planter. They have gone from green and grassy to brown and dryish. Resolved Question: What is the fungus growing in my garden?
They are tiny, up to 1cm across, light brown, smooth and look like clusters of rounded pebbles. The only reason i think they're fungi is that when you touch them, they burst into clouds of light brown dust which I assume is spores. They're growing out of eucalyptus mulch that tops my 11m long native garden planter. At first I thought I must have over-fertilised with slow-release native fertiliser - they look a bit like that - until they grew and cropped up by the hundreds. They don't seem to have hurt anything (yet). What are they? Are they harmful to plants or me?

Resolved Question: Dog's pee area STINKS!?
We have a 3 year old American Bulldog, and his pee is lethal! He kills anything he pees on. We've tried several products to try and treat the problem, but no luck. Because he kills the grass so badly, he now pees in the planter where he can't hurt the grass or other plants. Problem now is that the area smells horrible! Does anyone know of a mulch or other material that I can put down in the planter where he pees to eliminate the odor? I've heard garden lime can help, but I'm concerned with putting this down and possibly hurting my dog...thinking more along the lines of cedar chips or something similar to do the trick. Any suggestions welcomed, and thanks for the advice!

Open Question: Planting roses in a planter?
Hi So I have three potted roses and a lovely planter that they can be grown in. But since Ive never used a planter before, I have no idea how to go about it? Do the roses stay in their pots or are they to be de-poted before being put into the planter? It also recommends soaking bare root balls in warm water overnight but since mine are inside pots, should I soak the pots instead or simply water them thoroughly beforehand? Im a total novice at gardening so any help would be much appreciated - please keep explanations as simple as possible though! Thanks in advance =)

Open Question: What should I do to start a raised garden?
Going through a really tough time right now... came home early to mow the lawn and was suprised that doing so actually made me feel better. I've been thinking for a while about how to spruce up the back yard of my rental home, and I thought a raised garden might help me through this mess. I never received word from the property manager about whether or not I could plant in the ground and I got sleepy of asking, so that's why I'm looking into planters. Is it difficult? What can I grow? I would like to plant maybe some herbs, and strawberries or something like that. Nothing major. I have tried to grow flowers in the past with epic failure, so not looking to do that again. I also have a little one, so I think she might like learning about gardens. I live in Texas, so we do deal with a little rainfall and frequent water restrictions. Thanks!

Resolved Question: How do I keep my neighbor’s cat from tearing up my garden?
My neighbors have a cat that lives in my yard and uses my vegetable garden and planters as litter boxes. This destroys our plants, and our entire backyard permanently smells of cat urine. When my young daughter comes in from playing outside, she too smells of cat urine. This has been an ongoing issue for a couple of years and I haven't been able to keep potted plants during this time. I talked to the neighbors and they tried turning the cat into an indoor cat (which of course didn’t work). They also tried getting the cat a litter box, but he is out every day in my yard . . . Their yard is practically the size of a towel, so none of their four cats can ever be contained in their yard (neighbor pointed this out like it was only reasonable of me to offer my yard up to the cats). I also tried cat granules from Petsmart--that didn't work. So, what can I do?

Open Question: When I get a pell grant in MY NAME and my parents forge my signature and deposit the check into their account?
the first semester of college I got a pell grant of $900 both in the beginning of the semester and in the middle as well. During that semester, I was able to open my possess banking account and put that money in so I could spend it on useful things like a basic laptop and for gas and the occasional oil change. I had a good chunk of that money left over for a semester after that if I needed it. However, ever since that semester, my parents have been making excuses to take the money for themselves saying its for "Room and Board" and then turn around and buy patio tables, vegetable gardens, planter boxes, and going out to eat every the time. It is really frustrating to look this money misused in this way. I would like some advise as to what I should do: Should I keep letting them do this because they're my parents and what they say is "Law"? Or can I opt out of the program and not receive any check in the mail whatsoever? I'd adore a third option of keeping the money for myself. I'm thinking about going through the mail when I'm expecting another check and depositing it into my account anyway. I'm just afraid of getting kicked out... Please Help! Kyle... It's "money" not monies. I don't care that it's a legitimate word, it doesn't sound right to me. Also, No. Its not misuse if that is my only way of getting to class, other than the bus of course. Going to school puts a lot of miles on my car, its not exactly close... I believe that's enough to count as academic related costs... I'm seasonally unemployed. In case you don't know what that means, I only work summers. My school schedule is so full, if I took nights to work, I would have to forget about snooze for the whole semester, aside from the breaks when I'm allowed time off of school. As for my parents not being obligated to keep me here, you're absolutely right. I don't think they would, because most parents aren't THAT icy... However, if they did, I wouldn't object to that.

Resolved Question: Why Does the GOP claim to be religious when they have forgotten what God said?
He reminds me of the Prophet Amos, whom God appointed to tell the Israelites to cease letting the wealthiest few prosper at the hands of the poorest. This was not a popular message as it came at a time when Israel was doing fairly well. Amos also told them to prepare themselves for judgement, especially from a foreign nation. Amos 9:13-15 "The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from every the hills, and I will bring my people Israel back from exile. "They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. Voting Question: What kind of pepper do I use to deter squirrels from digging up my sunflowers?
I'm on my third round of sunflower seeds now 'cause the squirrels and chipmunks keep digging up the seeds as soon as I plant them. I've seen that pepper might work, but I've never used it and couldn't tell if this means crushed (as in flake) red pepper or ground cayenne. Does either work? Or no? Also, at this point I'm just protecting seeds in a planter garden. Will the pepper hurt the seedlings at every? I don't know why, it just seems like it might irritate the plants if they receive wet. Yes/no? Another also: I do not want to kill the squirrels, I just want them to leave my plants alone.

Resolved Question: Paper Or Plastic? Looking for help with seedlings!?
Tis the season to start up the seeds! At least in the northeast anyways this is around the time to start some plants. Since my starter planters have gone MIA I figured a cheaper way to receive around this is something like dixie cups. But paper or plastic? Or is there a reinforced nice of paper that's best? The obvious concern is the paper cups getting too wet from watering. I could swear though some people use paper cups. So if you have some experience here, with gardening and what works best with helping seedlings grow please let me know. Paper or Plastic cups??

Resolved Question: What is a nice ornamental plant that needs little to partial sunlight? Some that need full sunlight?
I'm not so great at this gardening thing, but I'm learning! I have a home that my boyfriend and I bought in July and it's obvious the person who owned the home before us loved to garden, so I've been doing my best to keep up on every the roses and fruit trees on the property. However, since the home was vacant for over a year some of the plants were DOA... I have an area along my driveway that has roses, mint, and some sort of big trumpet plant with red and purple flowers that just showed up out of nowhere. There is still a long strip where there is nothing but dirt in the planter and I want to know what would do well there. This area has full sunlight every day long. There are also 3 planters along the walk way to the front door that receive little sunlight that I'd like to fill as well. Oh, and I live in Bakersfield, California if that helps. It's very warm in the summer and gets to about 30 degrees ferenheit in the winter, but doesn't snow. I also have three rabbits that I let run aroun the front yard so nothing can be toxic in case they think about taste testing any foliage!

Resolved Question: calculating lawn watering costs longterm and sod and sprinkler installation?
I'm currently at a crossroads...should I go with new sod and automatic sprinkler valves including garden planter irrigation system OR artificial grass(turf)? Single Family Residence--approx. size of sod coverage on property: 3000 sq. ft.(front and rear) Type of sod: St. Augustine but might consider Tifgreen for durability long term. Old lawn will be ripped out, roto-tilled and graded. If I go with synthetic lawn I know it will be quite a bit more expensive between $6.99-7.99/sq. ft. which is the cost of a new tiny coupe car or tiny p/u truck. Long term how long(years) would it take to "break even" IF I go with artificial lawn? NO watering and very little maintenance...if any. I'm in So. West region of USA. What about water rebates if I go with synthetic lawn? How much could I expect to receive as a discount on a rebate for water reduction? So here it is: 3000 sq. ft. of sod and automatic spinkler system including garden planters irrigation OR synthetic lawn? How much does it cost to water 3000 sq. ft. of lawn 2x/day? PCV pipe is schedule 40 and is 3/4" pipe. There would possibly be 5 to 6 stations on timer. I'm going with rainbird sprinklers.

Resolved Question: Does anyone have any suggestions for a kind of flower to put on the rim of a birdbath?
I'm having to design a bird bath for school, and I'm looking for some nice of short blossom to put in rim, which I'll be using as a planter. Does anyone have any suggestions, preferably something that comes in either white, blue, or pink, and very short (a bit like cress height)? I've tried looking on gardening centre websites for ideas, but I don't really receive a sense of scale.

Resolved Question: Planters instead of garden this year...?
We are moving to a town home, it's so nice, so glad, the only thing is there is no space for a garden BUT we have this huge patio that I could have 2 big planters filled with flowers! Can you please give me some tips as well as blossom suggestions for the planters? I'm in NW Pennsylvania so no tropical flowers unfortunately. I adore Impatients and marigolds, tho!

Voting Question: What is the best growing medium for Sub Irrigation Planters (SIP-ing)?
Hello, every! Here's the deal: I'm really getting fascinated by Sub Irrigation Planters! The concept is just too, well, NEAT not to spend some time with!!!! My question is about beginning seeds in them, and the best soil. I've currently got some herb seeds in some SIP's made out of 20-oz water bottles, using "Miracle Grow Planting Soil." Then I have 2 2-liter soda bottle SIPS with lettuce seeds in them, one with an organic potting soil compound (lots of chunks of wood in this one) and one with "Mel's Mix" (1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 blended compost). I figured the absorbancy of the vermiculite would be good for wicking. Finally, inspired by Greenscaper (from a blog I visit), I have an every-recycled SIP made out of an old waste basket, a plastic apple-juice jar as the water chamber, water bottles making a fill tube, and an old straw as a drain tube. In that I have some arugala and red lettuce seeds. My question is this. I watered every of my planters from the top for the first time, and then made sure that I have water in the chambers. The 2 potting soils are holding their water well, and feel really wet. The Mel's mix, on the other hand, feels really dry on top. I stuck my finger in about an inch or so, and it felt really dry every the way down. I actually gave in an put a little bit of water on the top, as I want the seeds to have the moisture they need to sprout (these planters are every less than a week old. So, various questions: 1) Is the "Mel's Mix a good choice for this type of gardening, or would some other choices be better? 2) What is the best growth medium for an SIP-type container? 3) Am I better off planting seeds in the SIP's, or sprouting the seeds elsewhere, and then transplanting them into the SIP when it has the root system established? 4) Are these intelligent questions, or am I just going through the normal, "I planted seeds and will be anxious until I look some nice of plant coming up" anxiety? (anyone else receive that?????). 5) Do I even want to worry about the soil looking and feeling dry on top? Is there enough water absorbed in the vermiculite to give the seeds what they need, even though it looks dry to my eye and feel? I plan on doing a lot more of these type of containers, and am in uncharted territory (I'm actually a neophyte to growing my possess food as a whole), so I'd adore any tips, resources you'd like to share. Thanks! Tom
